For Assignment: An Essay on Alice Parker
I've seen a great many essays written over the past few days, and have carefully considered how I would approach this. I knew what the end result would be: Alice is a wonderful person and I'm really happy to call her friend. But we've been asked to dig deeper and explore what makes our partner tick, in the hopes of furthering inter-House unity. While that is an admirable and laudable goal, at least one essay proved to me that some people are absolutely determined to see the bad in everything and everyone -- and then, in consequence, belittle and be so cruel towards the person they were paired with that it is incredible that they have the decency to hold their head upright.
Alice Parker is not such an individual. She's a girl possessed of a very generous spirit, and fun to be around. Alice grew up in Pembrokeshire, Wales, with her parents, and when she goes home she stays with her dad, Paul. I don't think we actually got around to describing where we live, but if it's anything like where I grew up, then it's a lovely, lovely spot and fantastic for going out and exploring.
Alice wants to be an Auror when she leaves Hogwarts -- no other job has even been considered, I don't think. She told me that she wants to make a positive impact on the world, and it shows.
And -- I don't know. I've read over Landon's essay, and the more I sit here and think about it, the more I believe he's right. In general, this essay did no more to promote inter-house unity than any other assignment. I was lucky; the person I was paired with was someone that I already had a favourable impression of, and am glad now to call a friend. I'm happy to tell you that Alice's favourite dessert is gingersnaps and strawberry shortcake; that her favourite courses are Herbology and Charms; that her closest friends are Enid, Frank, Lily, Sirius, and Tierney; that Alice loves to fly and is at her happiest when on her broom and loves being on the Gryffindor Quidditch team; and that her proudest achievement thus far has been getting the OWLs necessary to take the classes that will hopefully one day get her into Auror training.
I've told you all of that, haven't I, and if you didn't know Alice beforehand then you wouldn't really have any idea about who she is now. All of these are dreams and aspirations that any one of us could have. But I learned a lot more about Alice than what I could put down onto paper. Most of it is entirely too intangible. Getting to know someone isn't the result of spending two days with a person and hope that they come out of the experience the richer; naturally we all hope that. It's the result of spending a protracted period with them and exploring what interests that you have in common and simply talking, getting to know one another. I have a feeling that this wasn't always the case last weekend.
The end result is that I just found out more about a person that I already knew is a good one, and fun to be around. But I'm definitely of Landon's school of thought. I am not sure if this was a lesson in inter-house unity so much as a lesson in futility for Hogwarts administration and the Ministry of Magic.
Conclusion: Alice Parker is a brilliant, vibrant, wonderful person whom I am glad to call friend, and I agree with the essence of Landon Aubrey's essay.

Bev or Shan, if one of you could bring my dressing gown, a set of pyjamas, my furry slippers and my stuffed pig and the book that is on the table next to my bed to the hospital wing, I would be most appreciative. I don't have any classes today so don't worry about my satchel with my texts in it.
I'd apologise for sicking up on Madame Pince's shoes, but I'm not sorry.
(6RG) She gave me two detentions, and I'm surprised she didn't give me a third. One for having my hair still coloured even though I explained that it was an accident and that even Professor Flitwick couldn't fix it, and one for being smart with my mouth. No, it was because I refused to put my hair back to the right colour. And then when I said I didn't even KNOW that we weren't supposed to have coloured hair, she told me that wasn't an excuse and I should have been at lunch.

There's hardly ever a dull day at Hogwarts, it seems. I'd like to thank those second years who made my life considerably more interesting. Really.
By the way, Olivia, the only reason standards are lowered in this school are because of you. Perhaps you should take advantage of the library once or twice. You might find something to put into your terribly empty head.

I've decided on a final project for both Arithmancy and Astronomy, based on a theory I read last week in passing during research for an essay. I've already spoken to Professors Sinistra and Vector and now the first step is to make a star chart chronicling the movements of six distinct constellations and then use Berum's Theory to correlate those numbers with Kronid's Arithmantical Theorem number 641. And I think I've gone over my head. Probably yours, too.

Blah, blah, blah, Enid's a slag. Blah, blah, blah Josh is undignified and horrible for even thinking to get someone pregnant. Blah, blah, blah, goodness me Shannon's snogging Mulciber! Oh and let's not forget the ones from last week. Anweller's pregnant and had started to show and that's why she's not here. Did you hear that she's going to give it up for adoption so that she can try to reclaim her name? And she's also sworn off that horrible Roland Williamson, who had the decency to be such a prat in the first place, forcing her like that. Did you see the second years that Dorcas Meadowes bit? I hear that they've got to live in the dungeons now, like bats. And I had a headache this morning and Madame Pomfrey was whinging to someone -- Filch, probably -- about how she had no more potions to counter the STDs that the Gryffindors have. Better stop the shagging or it won't get any better!
Honestly, you lot make me sick. Most of you lack brains at the best of times but put a few incredibly stupid rumours in front of you and you act as if your brains have not only left, but they rotted before they did so and left you with only the ability to eat, sleep, and open your mouths to sound like the braying jackasses you are.

Interesting what the Daily Prophet finds to print, is it not? I wonder if the owlery is in need of more lining?
I need to re-find my muffler. In the excitement of getting warm on Saturday after the match I misplaced it. Tonight is Astronomy lab and it is bound to be frigid in the tower.

Congratulations to Slytherin for their victory. But I admit it was a fancy bit of flying from Clare when the Snitch was caught. Brava.
But honestly, if I hear one more person complaining about Slytherin winning I will scream. The only reason that Hufflepuff had as good a showing as it did was because Clare did her job and did it well. She caught the Snitch. I felt like I was watching a repeat of Ravenclaw's match against Gryffindor -- only one goal scored! The Slytherin team knew what they were about and did what they were supposed to do. So really, why complain? You'll only make yourself look as ridiculous as Dedalus. And yes, Danger, you were ridiculous.

Yes, that was Mihail Krum at Theresa's New Year's party, and yes, he was with me. No, we did not sneak off to any room and no my grandfather is not demanding that we marry at once. Merlin. If you're going to tell lies about me, people, at least make them interesting.
Besides, there are so much more interesting things to discuss, such as why some students haven't returned to school this term.

I'd forgotten how remote this place can be in the middle of winter. Hogmanay preparations are underway and I just want out and I think I might take a walk tomorrow to watch for the first star to rise. That's always a bit of a magical moment, if you'll excuse the comparison. But there really isn't anything like standing in a field covered in snow, trees stark, black, and leafless against a multi-colour sky. And you're standing there and then without really realising it's happened you're staring at a single, twinkling light. If you wait just a few moments, more appear until you're standing under a purple blanket studded with diamonds.
I love winter. And, belatedly, a Happy Christmas to you all.

Bev made a really good point in her essay -- sometimes the person or object that you are writing about hasn't made a strictly positive impact. And such is the case for me, with my grandfather, Duncan Campbell.
1. Grandfather is the head of the family, of the clan. Through him comes down all judgements about major decisions made by members of my family. Whilst we are asked for our input, ultimately the decision is his.
2. Because of decisions that he's chosen to make regarding myself, and the input he has asked, it's been necessary for me to truly and honestly evaluate what I want out of life and whether it will be in any way feasible, considering the duty that I do have towards my family.
3. There are times when I hate him. There are times when I wonder that he has made the right decision or truly has my welfare in mind, but in the end I have to trust that he will take my wishes into consideration. He's teaching me patience in this way.

Good morning, Hogwarts, and welcome to Scotland! Moreover, welcome to the first snowstorm of the year! What's this mean? If you go outside now then you will die because you will lose your way, and it's rather easy to get lost in a snowstorm, and even easier get turned around, think you know where you're going, and find out that you don't.
Because you can't see. Wearing a bright color won't help. Yeah, you can tie a rope around you, but what will you do outside? You people honestly don't know what you're talking about.
I can't do this anymore.
